The Recording Academy presented the Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Performance since 1991, and nearly half of those trophies (11 of 23) have gone to music legend Tony Bennett. This year he is back with Lady Gaga at his side for their collaboration "Cheek to Cheek". Are unstoppable, or are behind Barbra Streisand finally win this race "Partners"?
Bennett last won this category in 2011 for "Duets II" which, incidentally, also featured Lady Gaga, and over the years has been virtually unbeatable in the race, losing only twice when nominated and both times the singer more young Michael Buble. Bennett lost last year, in fact: Buble "To Be Loved" exceeded that of Bennett "Live Duets".
Meanwhile, poor Babs still waiting in the wings. "Partners" is the 10th nomination Traditional Pop Streisand, but has never won. Indeed, five of their previous nine losses were to Bennett.
"Partners" has already made history for Streisand, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart in September, making her the only artist in history to have an album on the charts in every decade since 1960. Will strong sales of it’s propel his first win in the category?
Two other veterans category are reappointed, but have never won. Barry Manilow wins his fourth nomination for Traditional Pop "Night Songs". Bennett gave one of his previous three losses.
Johnny Mathis is also nominated for the fourth time, as "sending a Little Christmas". And one of their past three losses also went to Bennett.
Nominated for the first time in the category is Annie Lennox, who argues for "Nostalgia". Is this the first chance of losing Tony Bennett, or will she or another traditional rival dethrone the king Pop Grammy?
